Triathalon Course
Sunday, September 17, 2000

Thousands of spectators lined the city streets and crammed into Hyde Park to watch the men's triathlon Sunday. This huge park boasts the Archibald Fountain and an "Avenue of Trees" (Moreton Bay Fig Trees, a tree native to Australia) that lead from a fountain on one end of the park to a war memorial on the other. After the athletes swam in Sydney Harbour, they biked and then ran a loop along Macquarie Street, the city's oldest street.

The Opera House, where the finish line was located, is at the base of Macquarie Street, named for Governor Macquarie, one of the earliest governors of New South Wales, the state where Sydney is located. The triathletes also biked/ran past the State Parliament House of New South Wales, by the Mint Museum (where coins were made when Australia was first settled), by St. Mary's Cathedral and by Sydney Hospital, one of the country's oldest hospitals. The women's triathlon followed the same course on Saturday.
