Summer Olympics
Monday, Sept. 18, 2000

The Penrith Whitewater Stadium, located about an hour outside of Sydney, is host to the slalom canoe and kayak events during the 2000 Summer Games. A mechanical conveyor belt carries rafts, canoes and kayaks, with paddlers in them, from the finish pond back up to the start pond. The facility cost 6.6 million dollars to build and will be converted into a water amusement park after the Games. Visitors will be able to rent an inflatable inner-tube and ride down the man-made rapids.

Bethesda's Davey Hearn, twice a world champion, placed 12th in the men's canoe single finals here on Monday.
