Peru After Fujimori and Montesinos

Sensational videos of politicians taking bribes from CIA-backed spy chief Vladimir Montesinos have transfixed Peru in recent weeks. With Montesinos now in hiding and former president Alberto Fujimori in exile, the Andean nation will vote for a new president on April 8. Arturo Valenzuela, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Georgetown, says democracy can recuperate but Jorge Santisevan, former human rights ombudsman, says the United States owes Peru a debt for supporting its now-disgraced strongmen.
