Iraqi Exiles Wait for War Monday, March 17, 2003; 11:51 AM
In the poorer eastern side of Jordan's capital Amman, thousands of illegal Iraqi exiles sit waiting for war. The Abdul Ameer family live in a small one bedroom house, watching the news on television and dreaming of returning to their home in Baghdad. The whole family, including their 6-year-old son, have taken illegal jobs in coffee shops and restaurants in order to survive. They fled Iraq six months ago after, they claim, four men working for the government broke into their house and attacked them. The men abducted Maha, the mother, beat her into a coma and bayoneted her in the back. They left her on a waste site for dead. For now, they sit waiting for "God and the Americans."
