The National Library of Medicine
 MEDLINE, the world's most extensive collection of published medical information, used to be available only for a fee. But as of June, the National Library of Medicine has put the database on line for free, through PubMed (and its companion site, Grateful Med), allowing members of the public to access the most up-to-date and in-depth medical information there is. MEDLINE contains about 9 million records, including abstracts from about 3,800 medical journals. In spite of PubMed's catchy name, getting the information you need isn't exactly a day at the beach. And journal abstracts are notoriously dense. But MEDLINE has already saved users' lives -- and at the very least, you can use the information to make sure your doctor takes you seriously.
