Background Checks: Washington's chief law enforcement officer processes federal instant background checks for hand guns; FBI conducts background checks for long guns and pawn redemptions.

Permit Exceptions: Concealed weapons permits issued after July 1, 1996, and prior to November 30, 1998, may be used as an alternative to an instant background check for the duration of the permit (not to exceed five years).

Waiting Period: Five days, but may be extended by police to 30 days. An individual without a driver's license must wait 90 days.
