    clock11:30 a.m.: Two gunmen wearing black trench coats approached the 2,000-student Columbine High School from a nearby soccer field. They opened fire and entered the school cafeteria. They moved throughout the school, shooting as they walked and setting off explosives. Students hid in closets and barricaded themselves in rooms. Other fled the building, hiding in bushes or sprinting to a nearby park.

    clock Noon: SWAT teams found several explosive devices around the school. Ambulances whisked away the first wounded students who managed to escape.

    clock 12:30 p.m.: SWAT teams began a room-by-room sweep of the school.

    clock 2:30 p.m.: Students in hiding were freed by authorities. In small groups, the students and teachers ran from the building to a holding area, where they were frisked, questioned and offered medical care.

    clock 4 p.m.: Officers searching the library found the bodies the gunmen, who reportedly had shot students in the room as they hid beneath desks.

    4:30 p.m.: The school was declared safe.

    clock 6 p.m.: Explosives were found in cars in the school's southwest parking lot.
