Our family visited the Capitol last July. We met many kind and helpful officers. I cringe to think of what last Friday must have been like for the Capitol staff and visitors alike. Our hearts go out to the Capitol Police and especially to the families of officers Gibson and Chestnut. We are watching the tributes and funerals with great interest and praying for you all! John D. Ater, Minister Brilliant, Ohio Christian Church, my wife Diana, son David, and daughters Jaime and Jill. May God Bless You all!

As a veteran of Law Enforcement in the Northern Virginia area I know just how hard and dangerous being a Police of can be and is, every day. Both Officers did their jobs and did it very well. All of us in Law Enforcement are very proud of them and all of the U.S. Capitol Police. I remember years ago reading a poem. It talked about every time a Police Officer dies doing his job, "a part of America dies". With the death of these two officers a LARGE part of America has died with them. May GOD Bless both of them, their families, the U.S. Capitol Police and God Bless America.

God Bless and keep you both. Your bravery and commitment is inspiring. May your families find some small peace in the fact that you are heroes unsurpassed.

To the Chestnut and Gibson Families - please accept my condolences as you begin to deal with the tragic loss of someone so dear to you. While your husband/father has physically left this earth so suddenly, may your hearts be filled with the loving memories you will always have of him. While you can not see him, there's no doubt that he's an angel watching you from above. Each served his country well, for that you should feel proud. They paid the ultimate price for us all. Thank you for sharing your husband/father with us. May you be filled with God's love and caring as you try to make sense out of something that makes no sense. While many are strangers to you, please know that there will be many praying for you.

God be with our two heroes, and their families. Sincere condolences to the families of all involved. Every side of this event is a deep tragedy, and my heart goes out to all of the families. No one ever dreams that their children will grow up to encounter an event such as this. It is a heart breaking tragedy, every way you look at it.

It is so hard to believe that it has been less than a week since a gun man killed these members of the Capitol Police force and turned everyone's lives that are associated with Congress and Capitol Hill upside down. To the families and fellow officers of the Capitol Police force, I realize that these words are hollow. I know that almost all of us would turn back the clock if we could to have these two heroes back. Please know that all of you are and will remain in my daily thoughts and prayers. I don't understand it, but my mother often says that the Lord takes the good ones home with him first. As a House staffer, I knew Officer Chestnut from passing through the Document Door and had seen Detective Gibson around the Capitol complex with Rep. Delay. Looking back, their professionalism and attention to detail and duty was always evident. It is so sad and so horrible that it took something like this for all of us to realize how much each officer risks each and every day of his/her life and for us to finally say and show how much we appreciate each of them and what they do. As my grandfather always used to say to me, "it is not good-bye. It is until we meet again." Officer Chestnut and Detective Gibson, see you soon and I look forward to being able to thank you both personally.

Dearest Families of Officers Gibson and Chestnut: Your family tragedy is shared in my family and in my heart. Your husbands protected me as congressional staff and frequent visitor to the Capitol for years and I am forever grateful for their service. They were part of my extended congressional family and I feel this loss just as do police colleagues and congressional staff who still serve. I also share your loss because I too am the spouse of a very dedicated and loving police officer. I grieve with you, and all of us here in New York will stand proud for you until we all can once again stand proud together. Because I can't be there to join your farewell, I send these words, and my prayers that you'll soon find comfort. Today, when I was in need of comfort, I filled the house with the smell of homemade chicken soup and toll house cookies. I deliver them to you in my prayers. May you find peace. God be with you all.

My heart goes out to both grieving families: This will place a heavy burden on Gibson's sons-it's not easy to be the son or daughter of a national hero. My advise is to be yourselves. Focus on your strong points, and develop those talents. Take care of each other.

Heartfelt sympathy to the families of Officers Chestnut and Gibson. As a Capitol Hill worker, I walk the halls of the Congressional Buildings and the Capitol everyday. I like many, have taken the presence of these officers for granted, until now. The fearless and courageous acts of these two men is nothing short of heroic. Let their bravery, valor and selflessness be a lesson in humanity. Much appreciation and respect. D.A. Douglas

I live one block from Eliz. Seaton and attended the viewing on Wed. night. Although I did not know your family, I feel as though I can share in your bereavement. John gave his life for our country. You and the Chestnut family are in my prayers. I was particularly moved by the policemen from all over the country. Also, by the young policemen who attended the viewing with their young families. God bless you.

I come from a family of three police officers, my dad served on the DC police force for 25 years and I currently have 2 brothers serving on that same force. Whenever my dad left the house I feared for his life. My father passed away June 1990 due to an illness and the loss still hurts. But, what I later realized after I got over the anger of grief is that GOD has always been and is still in my life watching over me and I thank him for allowing me to have known my dad. I would like to say to the families of the slain officers I appreciate the sacrifice these two officers made to place their lives on the line daily for our safety. GOD will be your strength just trust and hold on in time he will give you peace! My prayers are with you always we are all brothers and sisters in Christ.

To the families of Officer Chestnut and Officer Gibson, I send my deepest sympathy and condolences. When the story first broke last Friday, they hadn't released the names of the officers who were slain. So for a short while, my family and I almost had our worst fears come true. I come from a family of police officers. One of my many cousins is a capital policeman. But when we found out that it was not him, we felt a sense of relief for only a moment. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. I could n't and still can not stop tearing every time I think of what happened last Friday. It was a tragic and unnecessary event. They are true heroes and I'm sure God thinks the same. Whatever comfort this is, I, along with the rest of the world, will keep your families and every other Police officer and civic employee in our prayers. May you feel some comfort real soon.

To The Gibson and Chestnut Families: My husband had the privilege of knowing J.J. Chestnut for many years when serving on the First Responders' Unit of the U.S. Capitol Hill Police Department. He worked with John Gibson for only a few months on the Dignitary Protection Division. Through this tragedy, I have felt many emotions for your families. Although I never met you, I do consider you part of my family, and also grieve for you and your loss. I have also felt a renewed appreciation and respect for my husband and the choice he made when he became a police officer. Although we may not understand God's plan, I do share your sorrow. My deepest condolences to you today and always.

To Officer Gibson's wife: I've never met you but your heartache and grief are felt worldwide. Here's an excerpt from a poem sent by a friend: I've learned - that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. I've learned - that your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you. I've learned - that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon. I've learned - that you can keep going long after you think you can't. May God be with you and your children through this difficult time.

....I was on my way home from work and caught in a major traffic jam when heard about this tragedy. The details were very sketchy at the time, but suddenly nothing else mattered and I started crying in the car. Suddenly my life was not so bad as I thought. I know these words cannot change anything but, my prayers and thoughts and faith go out to the families of these true heroes.....

I wish to offer my most heartfelt condolences for the loss of your loved ones. I lost my parents three years ago, not from gunfire, but tragically. All I can say is that time truly does heal, and there will come a time when you will feel your loved ones presence with you always. They did not die in vain and hopefully the many who morn with you can help to alleviate some of your immense pain. God Bless . Katherine Nilsson, Chester,CT

We can't begin to imagine the pain and heartache your families must be going through at such a sudden loss; the ones left behind are the ones who are suffering. We know; we lost our mother almost 3 years ago, and knew it was coming (cancer). At least know your loved ones will never suffer again, and are in a much better place. Our deepest sympathy to both families.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of Officer Chestnut and Detective Gibson. I worked on Capitol Hill for ten years and have many friends on the Capitol Police Force. Three of those years were spent working just down the hall from Officer Chestnut and I will always remember him fondly. I did not have the pleasure of knowing Detective Gibson but feel, like many others, the pain of losing a member of the "capitol family" just the same. You are all in my prayers.

We cannot say that we know what you are going through because we have not experienced it. However, we can say that the Bible says in Prov. 3:5-6 to trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not into your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path. God's strength is perfect when our strength is gone. He'll carry us, when we can't carry on, raised in His power, the weak become strong. Our deepest sympathy goes out to you all. Phil. 4:7 says, and the peace of God , which surpass all understanding will guard your heart and mind, through Christ Jesus. God Bless You All!

As part of the law enforcement world through family and work, I empathize with your pain, heartbreak, and long days ahead. I pray the continued support from your "police family", friends, and neighbors. My prayer is that you will also lean on the only true source of comfort and relief, our Heavenly Father. May God place a burden on the hearts of our citizens to openly appreciate and pray for our law enforcement protectors daily, not just during the immediate aftermath of tragedy.

To Officer Chestnut and Special Agent Gibson. Thank you. Nine of my family members, including my 10 month old daughter were in the Crypt at the Capitol when this horrible crime was committed. At that time we had no idea that somebody was giving their life to keep us safe. When we did hear the news of these two brave officers, we cried. We will never be able to show our gratitude. Before visiting the Capitol on Friday the 24th, we buried my father, a Vietnam Veteran, in Arlington National Cemetery. He is resting now with these two great men who protected all the visitors that day as if they were their children.

I pray that God Almighty may strengthen you through the days and the years ahead. Although your loved one is gone in the flesh his memory is always with you. Continue to look to God for strength. The first time I ever had contact with a U. S. Capital Police officer I was 12 years old. It was the spring of 1954, and I was playing hooky from school. My friend and I wanted to ride the Capital subway train. We were told it was the only subway in DC at the time. After several rides back and forth, an officer approached us and asked what we were up to. We were a bit frightened, thinking the officer would call our parents. But he did not! He took us to the rotunda and explained all about how the building represented our freedom and our heritage. He wanted us to know that the place we were in was not a playground, but a place to be respected and honored. Later, as a teenager, I met another U. S. Capital Police officer. He was simply the finest man, and the finest baseball coach, I have ever known. These were my thoughts the moment I heard the tragic news. I just thought it important to say that the most tragic thing of all is the loss of average family men! Men who led normal everyday lives like the rest of us. It is because of men and women like Officers Chestnut and Gibson that the rest of us can go on living. God bless them and their families. And God bless America.

Today on my way to court I watched the funeral Procession for Detective Gibson on RT 123 in VA. When I saw it my eyes became filled with tears, my throat began to close up, and my heart feel to my feet. I feel sorry for the families, friends, and co-workers of Detective Gibson and Officer Chestnut. I know that they will be deeply missed by everyone who knew them. My heart and my prayers go out to you. What ever you do NEVER EVER FORGET the memories that you have and the good times that you have shared that is what keeps them alive.

WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS, ALL OUR CARES AND GRIEFS TO BEAR. MY HEART IS ONCE AGAIN SAD BECAUSE OF THE UNTIMELY DEALTH OF TWO GOOD POLICE OFFICERS TRYING TO DO THEIR JOB! WORKING TO SERVE THE PUBLIC, AND TO MAKE A LIFE FOR THEMSELF AND THEIR FAMILY. PLEASE KNOW THAT I AM PRAYING FOR BOTH THE GIBSON AND CHESTNUT FAMILIES THAT GOD WILL SEND THE CONFORTER TO COMFORT AND HEAL YOU DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME. GOD BLESS!

To the Chestnut and Gibson families: I send my heartfelt sympathy to all of you. As someone who worked on Capitol Hill in the early 1970's (when there was no real security as there is today), I truly admire the hard, dedicated work of Officers Chestnut and Gibson. I just returned from Constitution Avenue where I watched the procession for Officer Chestnut. I am proud to be an American and have people such as Officers Chestnut and Gibson protecting me. I send my best wishes to you and may G-d continue to bless all of you.

I just wanted to take the opportunity to send my sincerest condolences to the Chestnut and Gibson. Your living has not been in vain, as thousands were blessed by your service to our nation! I attended the memorial service for Officer Chestnut (as part of Ebenezer's choir), and I was truly moved and touched by the outpouring of love that was shown. May God bless each family as you move on with the days ahead.

I would like to send my deepest heart felt condolences to the Gibson and Chestnut family. I know there is not enough sympathies and prayers in the world to undo what has been done, but if possible try and stay strong and keep your faith in God to help you through this. Once again I am sorry that this happened

Your loved ones will be sorely missed, and words seem so inadequate to comfort you in this time of sorrow. But know that God's hands will heal your hurt, and joy will indeed come in the morning. May God bless and watch over your families, as well as the thousands of law enforcement officers who, just as your husbands and fathers, lay their lives on the line each day. We pray for you and with you. Emille and Tamara Robinson Lanham, MD

Officers Chestnut and Gibson are in our prayers, and I hope that the thousands of prayers also include all of our brave, good men and women in blue, alive and dead.I am so proud of our Nation when it becomes so obviously demonstrated in times of need that we are indeed one Nation under God! Therefore, we really know that we all are God's people. To the families of the slain officers, and to the Weston family, God knows and will assist you in your time of grief.

As an assistant superintendent of the U.S. House Office Buildings in the Capitol complex, I deeply regret the loss of these two fine officers. My condolences to the families of officers Gibson and Chestnut. In their sacrifice, they showed the love of which there is none greater: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13) May they serve as shining examples of bravery, dedication, and heroism for us all. "There is no death, only a change of worlds. " (Chief Seattle)

I send my heartfelt condolences to the slain officers families. If there were meaningful gun control laws on the books these 2 officers might be alive today. The perpetrator stole his father's gun easily because it wasn't locked away securely as it should have been. If the mentally disturbed perpetrator of the crime had not been able to get a gun so easily he wouldn't have been able to kill so easily. The all to easy acces to guns is a problem that must be addressed today not in the near or dista nt future.
