At Issue: Whether a New York program in which public school teachers provided remedial education to students in parochial schools unnecessarily entangles church and state, violating the First Amendment.

Decision: The Court
ruled to permit public school teachers to provide remedial help to students at parochial schools, overturning a case forbidding government-funded teachers to tutor children in religious schools.
