A record high 337 U.S. troops are reported killed in Vietnam during the previous week, pushing the total for the war over the 10,000 mark – or one-third the total U.S. fatalities in the Korean War (second column). A wire story reports on the "heavy conflict with a North Vietnamese force of unknown size" in the DMZ. This was the firefight surrounding Peace Church. In other news (bottom of page), leading legal experts in Washington, D.C., warn that without immediate change, "the city's spiraling crime rate [would] continue to rise."
