What Satellites Do
COMMUNICATIONS
Microwave relay: Telephone calls, Internet and other computer data, secret government communications.
Television signals:
Direct-to-viewer systems, TV network feeds to stations, private TV links.
Satellite telephone:
Worldwide access bypasses local phone company. Signal available anywhere on Earth. Companies and governments rushing to start services.
Cellular telephone: Direct to "space telephones" on ground.
Amateur radio: Relay signals between ham radio operators.
Pager: Uses radio frequencies to reach subscribers within a service area.
