Twenty Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in India constructed a sand mandala at the Sackler Gallery in Washington from Jan. 1 to Jan. 27, 2002. When it was complete, the monks brushed up the sand and poured it into the Tidal Basin so that its healing power would symbolically spread throughout the world.
