audio The fifth child of Iree and Bass, Lonzo Bass says he used to drink a lot, calling it "a family tradition." He was in two serious accidents involving drunken drivers. In both, he went through the cars' windshields. In the first accident, Lonzo says, "They thought I was dead; they was getting ready to bury me"; in the second, the car went over a 100-foot drop. Afterward, he could not read, write or count. He has learned to talk and walk again.

Doctors have told Lonzo that any slight head trauma could kill him. He is 40. He takes Prozac, lives one day at a time: "Sometimes I feel depressed. But you know, I know I'll make it through. I know I'll make it."
