audio In front of the old Saul, Ky., schoolhouse, Clint Bowling shoots baskets. Jeremy Bowling, right, does homework while his mom, Wanda, and cousin, Josh, watch.

Says Clint:
"Everybody said, 'Get your high school diploma, you'll get a job.' Well, I got it. I dropped out of high school as a senior, and then I decided to go back. I graduated so I could make something of myself. And you can see I ain't doing nothing now. I've tried. A lot of my cousins are dropouts; they ain't went back to school. And not one of my uncles out there has a high school diploma. Some of them didn't ever get through grade school. And they have the nerve to tell me what to do with my life."
