audio The Bowling family believes Marion suffered brain damage from a childhood accident in which a rock lodged in a mulberry tree fell on her head and knocked her out. Says Iree: "That about killed her. And we never did take her to a doctor — in fact, we didn't even know what a doctor could do for her. But after that, Marion was never right again."

Marion also was a victim of serious domestic abuse, by her husband. She now lives alone.
