Bobby Coward receives a kiss from his mother, Bertha Coward, before leaving to counsel residents at District nursing homes. Coward, a quadriplegic who is fiercely independent, says one of the biggest challenges he faces is getting on and off of the Metro. “I have a van, but if I don’t have a driver, I have to get on the subway,” he says. That requires managing the gap between the subway car and the platform. “If my front tires go down between the gap, I’m stuck,” he says. “Sometimes the subway operator isn’t paying attention and wants to close the doors. The only positive thing about it is that the other riders come to assist me.”
