ADAPT was established in 1983, but an act of civil disobedience in 1978 put the group in the forefront of the fight for disability rights. The founders handcuffed themselves and their wheelchairs to buses to protest the inaccessibility of Denver's public transportation.

"Over a six-year struggle, we got the city of Denver to agree to purchase wheelchair accessible busses," says Mike Auberger, co-founder and national coordinator of ADAPT. "After that, a group of us decided to make [access to public transportation] a national issue."
