Hidden SmilesChador-clad women are often invisible to the camera. Their solemn and graceful figures are depicted, but nothing of the personality beneath the cover is revealed. In reality, they weren't somber at all. I found some of these women would laugh with me and hug me as well. Yet one added, "Oh, you can't publish these pictures in your newspaper, our husbands will see them. They will chop off our heads." I thought she was joking, but my interpreter chimed in, "No, I think she's quite serious." Alas, these laughing women made me promise not to publish their smiling faces, so I won't. |
