The Ayatollah's Shadow

The revolution of 1979 when Ayatollah Khomeini came to power casts a long shadow. Conservative Ayatollah Ali Khameni is now the country's top religious leader and carries greater authority in the government than reformist President Mohammed Khatemi. By mid-May, the hard-line clerics had shut down 14 liberal publications in the country, and a prominent journalist, allied with the president, had been jailed.
