Orthodox Jews overlook the West Bank Palestinian town of Beit Jala from the Jewish neighborhood of Gilo, on the southern outskirts of Jerusalem in October 2000, less than a month after the beginning of what Palestinians call the al-Aqsa intifada. "I say that we have entered into a much more serious situation than we previously thought," Israeli government spokesman Nachman Shai said.
