In May, Clinton reached out to newly elected Iranian leader Mohammed Khatemi, voicing optimism that differences between the U.S. and Iranian people "can be bridged." Clinton spoke with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who, when first elected in 1994, drew comparisons to Clinton for his moderate politics and youthful exuberance.
