In May 2001, John Paul II became the first modern pope to visit Greece, meeting with Greek Orthodox Church leader Archbishop Christodoulos in an effort toease religious tensions stemming from the "Great Schism" that separated the Christian church over 1,000 years ago.

Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist Rigoberta Menchu had a personal audience with John Paul II during his visit to Guatemala in July 2002. The pope apologized for church abuses against the indigenous population during the colonization of the Americas.
