She was called "Saint of the Gutters."
She spent her life caring for the
poorest of the poor, for the Earth's
most destitute and unwanted souls.
With the death of Mother Teresa on
Sept. 5, 1997, the world lost its most
famous symbol of selfless
compassion, history marked the
passing of an icon and the poor and
suffering lost a tireless friend. In
steamy Calcutta, thousands waited
for hours to say a final farewell.
Although Mother Teresa is gone, her
legacy lives on in the works of the
religious order she founded. Gentle
hands wash wounds, strong arms
give comfort and tender words ease
the loneliness at death's door.
