The year 1997 marked the 20th
anniversary of the death of an
American icon, Elvis Presley. In
death, Elvis has in some ways
become even more popular than he
was in life: In death, he has evolved
from star to legend.
Each year, thousands of fans make
the pilgrimage to Memphis, Elvis's
birthplace and the cradle of his
music. The crowds are thickest
during "Elvis Week," which
commemorates the anniversary
of his death, Aug. 16.
Many hard-core fans won't visit Elvis's
grave at Graceland, his sprawling
mansion home, refusing to believe the
King is really dead.
