Her "family," as Kristin Kierig calls her 115 cats, includes strays, victims of divorced families, and even a cat abandoned when his owner, a police officer, was killed in the line of duty.
Kierig started adopting strays to save them from death at animal shelters. Now she has devoted her home and her life to dozens of cats. Unlike most such "cat ladies," many of whom are routinely arrested on cruelty charges by animal control officers, Kierig truly cares for her cats not only materially, but also emotionally.
Every morning she rises at 1:30 a.m. from her tarp-covered bed, where she sleeps surrounded by sighing, snoozing cats. She has to get up that early to finish her morning chores cleaning litter boxes, filling the food bowls and generally attending to the roiling mass of cats and kittens before heading to work.
