Steinmetz began his career in photography by hitchhiking through 17 African countries. He has completed 11 assignments for National Geographic Magazine and has won two World Press Photo awards. His current passion is photographing the world's deserts from a motorized paraglider, but claims that his life's most significant adventure is his daughter, Nell, and his recently born twin sons, Nick and John.
