Born in Japan in 1959, Igarashi received a B.A. in anthropology from West Virginia University and then joined the Institute of African Studies at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. After graduating from the Japan Photography Institute in Tokyo, he began work on the "Kilimanjaro Project," conveying the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro and Africa in general.
