Six-year-old Kazungu Kautingu stretches in the kitchen doorway of her home in Kelongwa, Zambia. Kazungu's father, David, though not a trained physician, runs a clinic that provides medical care for 4,000 local residents.

Raised in Thokoza, 25 kilometers east of Johannesburg, and the eldest of five siblings, Hadebe says his reason for becoming a photographer mirrors the reason this book was made: "I want to tell a more complete side of our story." He began work at The Johannesburg Star in 1995 and in 1999 joined the Associated Press. A 1998 World Press Photo award winner in the spot news category, he now covers southern Africa extensively and was most recently in the Congo.
