  During the Six Day War Israel, under fire from Jordan on its eastern border, also attacked into the Palestinian area known as the West Bank. As the Arab troops fled, the Israelis found the town of Jericho, population 100,000, largely deserted. The people, most of them refugees from the 1948 war, had fled to Jordan.
