	For Palestinians, the humiliation of the Arab armies in 1967 forged a sense that they had to act on their own to regain land lost to Israel. The Palestine Liberation Organization, under the leadership of a civil engineer named Yasser Arafat, began to mount independent attacks on Israel from positions in Jordan.
