McCain married Carol Schepp in July 1965 and adopted her two children from another marriage. The Vietnam War would intervene in their marriage and they would divorce in 1980. She told Robert Timberg, author of "The Nightingale's Song," that the divorce was attributed to ". . . more to John turning 40 and wanting to be 25 again than I do to anything else."
