Rep. Scotty Baesler (D)
The lone Democrat in the Kentucky congressional delegation, Baesler represents the 6th Congressional District. He ran an unsuccessful campaign against Brereton Jones for the 1991 Democratic gubernatorial nomination. A tobacco farmer, Baesler played basketball for the legendary University of Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp.

Rep. Jim Bunning (R)
Professional baseball was Bunning's first career. He played for the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers. In 1996, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He entered politics as a member of Fort Thomas City Council. Bunning served four years in the state Senate before he won election to the 4th District U.S. House seat in 1986. A conservative Republican with national backing, Bunning last ran for statewide office in 1983, when he lost a bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.

Lt. Gov. Steve Henry (D)
An ambitious politician who has never served a full term in any elective office, Henry has received limited support from his former running mate, Gov. Paul Patton (D). The 44-year-old orthopedic surgeon was a childhood friend of retiring Sen. Wendell Ford (D).
Charlie Owen (D)
Owen, a millionaire businessman, ran an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic congressional nomination in Kentucky's 3rd district in 1994. When Owen announced in July, his wife, a Republican, said she did not know whether she would change her party affiliation so she could vote for her husband in the primary.
