Bill Bradley on Abortion By Howard Kurtz Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, January 30, 2000; Page A14 Candidate: Bill Bradley Market: New Hamspshire Producer: Crystal Team Time: 30 seconds Audio: [NARRATOR:] Of the seven men running for president, only one candidate has been pro-choice for everyone all the time. Bill Bradley. [BRADLEY:] This is the kind of issue that you can't straddle. You can't be on both sides; you have to decide which side you're on. Are you anti-choice or are you pro-choice? And I decided a long time ago that I'm pro-choice. Analysis: This ad, with a female narrator, is a clear attempt to appeal to women on a gut-level Democratic issue. Without mentioning Vice President Gore's name, Bradley suggests that his rival once opposed abortion, which is not the case. But as a House member from Tennessee, Gore did vote against federal funding for abortions, an issue on which he says he's changed his mind. And Gore voted for a 1977 amendment that said abortion "takes the life of an unborn child who is a living human being." While a new Gore ad mentions his "pro-choice" stance, Bradley is successfully exploiting the fact that the vice president once shifted his position.
