WASHINGTON (AP) Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., today postponed next week's scheduled announcement of his presidential candidacy, citing ongoing hostilities in Kosovo.

"It's not appropriate at this time to launch a political campaign," McCain said in a brief announcement.

The Arizona lawmaker had been scheduled to make a formal declaration of his candidacy on Tuesday, with appearances in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Arizona, as well as a breakfast with cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., where he graduated.

Howard Opinsky, a spokesman, said the postponement was "until further notice." He added that "the only intervening situation here is Kosovo. Nothing else is any different."
