Vote Sought on Clinton Library Bonds
Reuters LITTLE ROCK, April 9—A campaign is underway to block a bond issue that would purchase land for President Clinton's presidential library here. Opponents of the bond issue say government arrogance and the lack of a public vote are the issues, not Clinton's politics. "This isn't about President Clinton. It's about not giving the people a chance to vote on how their money is spent," said Nora Harris, president of Empower Arkansas, which has opposed several other spending plans of local governments in Arkansas. Little Rock's governing commission has approved $16.5 million in general improvement bonds, which do not require a popular vote, to finance site acquisition and preparation for Clinton's presidential library. The estimated $85 million cost of the library would be raised through private contributions. Empower Arkansas has an April 19 deadline for gathering the 8,500 signatures of registered voters required to subject the bond issue to a public vote. © 1998 The Washington Post Company | |||||||||
