The least public feeding frenzy of the 1996 presidential campaign involved allegations that Republican nominee Bob Dole had had an extramarital affair which began in 1968 when he was married to his first wife.

Both The Washington Post and Time magazine investigated the story and conducted long interviews with the woman. The National Enquirer eventually broke the story in October, but the accusations received either scant coverage or no coverage at all in most mainstream outlets, so they likely had little effect on the outcome of the election.
