Senate Roll Call to Open Deliberations on Witnesses
Tuesday, January 26, 1999; 4:50 p.m. EST The 58-41 roll call by which the Senate voted to reject a motion to open the debate on whether to authorize taking depositions of witnesses for the impeachment trial. On this vote, a "yes" vote was a vote to open the debate and a "no" vote was a vote to keep it closed. Voting "yes" were 38 Democrats and 3 Republicans – Sens. Susan Collins (Maine); Arlen Specter (Pa.); and Kay Bailey Hutchison (Tex.). Voting "no" were 52 Republicans and 6 Democrats – Sens. Blanche Lambert Lincoln (Ark.); Mary Landrieu (La.); John Kerry (Mass.); Max Baucus (Mont.); Robert Byrd (W.Va.); and Jay Rockefeller (W.Va.). Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) was not present for voting; she was hospitalized earlier in the day with the flu.
