Encryption Key Player: Peter G. Neuman
Washingtonpost.com staff Peter Neuman is a principal scientist for the Computer Science Laboratory in Menlo Park, Calif. Neuman has testified extensively on Capitol Hill. He has also contributed to encryption research efforts, including the National Research Council report, "Cryptography's Role in Securing the Information Society," and co-authored "The Risks of Key Recovery, Key Escrow and Trusted Third Party Encryption." Neuman earned his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1961. He then spent 10 years at the Computer Science Lab at Bell Labs in New Jersey until going to the Computer Science Laboratory in 1971. He has worked extensively for the government on privacy and security issues through such channels as the IRS Commissioner's Advisory Group and the U.S. General Accounting Office's Executive Council on Information Management and Technology.
