Name That Ship!

And the winner is...USNS Bruce Heezen, the name of the Navy's newest oceanographic ship.

More than 1,600 school groups across the nation submitted names for the U.S. Navy's newest vessel, an oceanographic survey ship. Those names were pared down to a list of ten, and then to the following top two:

St. Martin's Lutheran School -- Annapolis, Md.
Name's Origin: The shift in wind direction due to the rotation of the earth on its axis is called the Coriolis effect. The “winds of change” are spurring more protection and understanding of the oceans.

HEEZEN
Oak Lawn Elementary -- Cranston, R.I.
Name's Origin: 20th-century American oceanographer who discovered turbidity currents and aided the understanding of plate tectonics. Heezen, who died while diving in the Navy's deep submersible submarine, created countless maps and photographs of the ocean floor, revealing a frontier nine times the surface of the moon.
