Listing Your Event or Announcement
In the Newspaper

Publicize your coming public event or announce your milestones in The Washington Post. Use the menu below to select the category that best reflects the type of event you are publicizing. Some events fall under more than one category (for instance, a blood drive in Montgomery County might be considered both a health-related event and a community event). To ensure the widest publicity, be sure to send your listing to all applicable categories. You will save time and win endearment from the Post staffers who edit the calendars by sending listings only to the applicable sections.

Send a complete description of the event, including date, time, street address, cost (if any) and a publishable contact phone number. Obituaries and Death Notices

Death Notices

Death and in memoriam notices are paid advertisements that appear in the Metro section every day. Anybody can place a death notice of any length.

The cost is $9.21 per line, with a minimum charge of $64.47 (which includes up to seven lines). Some funeral homes include a death notice as a service for the family. If someone other than the funeral home or crematorium provides a death notice, the death must be verified through the funeral home, the crematorium or, in the case of organ and cadaver donors, the hospital to which the body was donated.

You can phone in a death notice to 202-334-4122 (Monday-Friday 8:30a.m.-5p.m., Saturday and Sunday noon-5 p.m.) or send it by fax to 202-334-7188. Faxed death notices must be received by 3 p.m. and must include billing information (name, address, home and daytime phone numbers, and a fax number if possible). You will be contacted by phone or fax to verify the cost of your advertisement before its final approval to run in the newspaper.

You can also file a death notice in person, at The Post's front counter, at 1150 15th St. NW, until 5 p.m. weekdays. You can pay in person with cash, a check (no starter checks), Visa, MasterCard, American Express or a money order.

Obituaries

Obituaries are news stories. Unlike death notices, you do not pay for obituaries.

Obituaries are written about people who have lived in the Washington area for a substantial part of their lives. Families should call as soon as possible. Obituaries can be printed up to 30 days after the death, but we need to hear from you well before that deadline. You must include the deceased's age, medical cause of death, place of death, place of birth, town of residence, and length of time lived in the Washington area. Also needed are a work history, information about any military experience, the name of the college from which the deceased matriculated, the name of the local high school (if applicable) and information about membership in local organizations and volunteer work. List the names and towns of residence of all spouses (if there was a divorce, it will be identified as such, and if the spouse is deceased, please include the year he or she died), and the names and towns of residence of all surviving children and siblings. Include the numbers, but not the names, of any grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Finally, please give the name of the mortuary, although it will not be published. No funeral or memorial service/donation information is included in obituaries.

Please fax this information to 202-334-6553. After sending your fax, you must call 202-334-6477 to confirm that it was received and to answer questions, if there are any. The newspaper tries to print all obituaries the day after it has received information, but it does not guarantee that this will happen.

You can also send your information in the mail; again, you must call 202-334-6477 to confirm its receipt and to answer questions. If you have any questions about these or other requirements, call the obituary desk at 202-334-6477.
