What the 142 charges mean
First-degree murder: 24 chargesHolmes is charged twice for each person killed, first for murder with deliberation (meaning planning), and also for murder with extreme indifference to the value of human life. Prosecutors added the “extreme indifference” charges so that any life sentences would have to be served consecutively rather than concurrently.
Attempted murder: 116 chargesHe is charged twice for each person injured, in the same format: attempt to kill with deliberation and attempt to kill with extreme indifference to human life.
Possession of explosive or incendiary device: 1 chargeThis could refer to explosives rigged in Holmes’s apartment.
Crime of violence: 1 chargeThis is a weapons charge, for using deadly weapons (an assault rifle, shotgun and handgun) during the commission of murder and attempted murder.
Just before midnight, MT Hundreds of people packed into four sold-out screenings of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colo. The suspect, James Holmes, allegedly purchased a ticket and went into Theater 9.
Around midnight The screening began. Holmes allegedly approached an emergency exit to the right of the screen, propped open the door and geared up.
Around 12:35 a.m. Dressed in black SWAT gear, Holmes allegedly came back through the door, hurled two canisters of an unknown gas and opened fire on the audience. He allegedly walked up the aisle, firing as he went. The shots lasted 60-90 seconds. The bullets pierced the wall of Theater 8 next door.
12:39 a.m. Police began receiving emergency calls.
90 seconds later Officers arrived at the theater and almost immediately arrested Holmes, who was next to his white Hyundai outside a rear entrance to the theater.

Colorado prosecutors have formally charged a former doctorate student with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder.
