The ‘grand bargain’ that fell to bickering

The debt ceiling crisis of 2011, perhaps more than any other period, tested President Obama's promise to bring bipartisanship back to Washington. As negotiations stalled and started over the summer, Obama publicly emphasized a partnership with Republican leaders. But as talks collapsed behind closed doors, so did his talk of bipartisanship.
