Earmarked: Inside Pascagoula's beach park promenade

A massive spending bill released on Tuesday includes more than 6,000 earmarks totaling $8 billion, including $900,000 for construction of a beach park promenade in Pascagoula, Miss. Here's a look at where the money from the earmark — sponsored by Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) — would go.

Facts and Figures

City:  Pascagoula, Missippi

Population (2006 estimate):  23,719

Location:  Gulf Coast, Missippi

The Senate approved a bill in 2009 that alloted
$500,000 for the construction costs of the Pascagoula
beach park promenade.

In a 2009 press release about the release of the funds,
Sen. Wicker said: "Pascagoula's beachfront promenade
will play an important part in the city's ongoing rebuilding
efforts by stimulating commercial and retail growth. The
promenade will also add another layer of protection for
nearby homes and businesses in the event of a future
tidal surge."
