On an night's when baseball's past, present and future paid homage to Ted Williams, the man considered the game's greatest hitter, Boston's Pedro Martinez pitched himself into the All-Star Game record book Tuesday by striking out the first four hitters and leading the American League over the Nationals, 4-1.

FLASHBACK
Alomar Powers American League
Good pitching beats good hitting? Not in Coors Field. The American League all-stars stole a record five bases, homered twice and collected 19 hits in all to beat the NL Stars, 13-8, at the 1998 All-Star Game in Denver. The longest game in all-star history, as predicted, either broke or challenged most of the game's records for hitting and scoring. Baltimore's Roberto Alomar (pictured) was named the game's most valuable player.
