Saturday, March 21, 1998; 4:33 p.m. EST DAYTON, OhioPaige Sauer scored 23 points and Connecticut pulled away in the second half for a 74-57 win over Arizona Saturday in the semifinals of the women's NCAA East Regional.
The Huskies will play North Carolina State in the regional finals on Monday. Earlier Saturday, the Wolfpack upset top-seeded Old Dominion, 55-54, leaving top-ranked Tennessee the only No. 1 seed left in the tournament.
Sauer matched her career high for Connecticut (34-2). Rita Williams added 15 points, Svetlana Abrosimova had 12, and Stacey Hansmeyer and Amy Duran 11 apiece.
Lisa Griffith had 21 points 16 in the first half for Arizona (23-7), and Aida Barnes had 17.
Sauer hit the first basket of the game and was 6-of-11 in the first half, as the Huskies built a 35-32 halftime lead.
A basket by Barnes opened the second half and Arizona, playing in the round of 16 for the first time, tried to outrun Connecticut. But the Huskies so dominated the boards, outrebounding Arizona 51-33, that the Wildcats were never able to use their transition game effectively.
Arizona rallied briefly in the second half, cutting the lead to two points on consecutive baskets by Barnes and Griffith, and another by Barnes before Connecticut went on a 12-2 run to regain control.
During a two-minute span, Sauer hit a pair of free throws and completed a three-point play, and Duran had a three-point play. Baskets by Williams and Abrosimova completed the run, and Connecticut was unchallenged the rest of the way.
