U-Conn. Upends Duke for Title
Connecticut won its first NCAA tournament title in stunning fashion March 29, outexecuting the Duke Blue Devils down the stretch to get a 77-74 victory at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. Richard Hamilton (pictured) scored 27 points and was named the most outstanding player of the Final Four.

Purdue Wins 1st National Title
Duke had Purdue on the ropes early, but the Boilermakers rebounded from a subpar first half to defeat the Blue Devils, 62-45, March 28 to win the school's first NCAA basketball title.

Volunteers Win Championship
They were rusty and rocky, but the Tennessee Volunteers won the national championship Jan. 4 after capping a perfect season with an imperfect 23-16 victory over No. 2 Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl.

John Thompson (pictured), who brought Georgetown basketball to national prominence over the past 25 years, announced Jan. 8 that he was leaving coaching because of personal reasons. Assistant Craig Esherick will take his place.
