TPC at Avenel Hole-by-Hole Guide
How Pros Play the Hole: Rather than risk trouble, most pros will play safe by laying up with a long-iron off the tee. If a player hits short, he faces a blind second shot from a difficult angle. Most Troublesome Hazards: Pot bunkers surrounding the green. Toughest Pin Placement: Middle of the right side of the green, behind the pot bunker. Fred Funk's Take: "A lot of options. Guys hit anything from 3-iron off the tee to drivers, depending on how the hole is playing and how aggressive they want to play the hole. The longer hitters can almost drive that green with the wind. But there's a lot of penalties to be paid if you miss. If you bail out right, you get up in those pot bunkers on the right side, and you're in a lot of trouble. If you don't hit enough club off the tee or you don't quite hit it solid, you end up in the pot bunkers over on the left or the rough. It's a hole where you can take a chance. If the pin is on the right, it's a difficult hole. Then it's time to lay back and have a full shot in. If the pin is on the left, you can play pretty aggressively."
