Darby's speed as a running back helped him score 23 touchdowns and earned him a second-team All-Met selection in the fall. This winter, it gave him the distinction of being the fastest high school boy in the country. The powerful 5-foot-11, 180-pounder got up to full speed in a hurry, finishing the season undefeated in the 55-meter dash and as the national leader in the event (6.28 seconds). He also owned the fastest time in the country in the 200, winning the race at New Balance Indoor Nationals in 21.24. Darby was also third at nationals in the 60 in 6.77. He ran the same time in the 60 at a meet in Japan in February, when he represented USA Track & Field in international competition.
