| DCIAA Roosevelt is coming off its first league title since 1972. ..... Mattison is the first DCIAA player in the class of 2009 to have signed with a Division I school (Florida Atlantic). ..... McKinley's success will depend upon what kind of front-court help the Trainers can give to their stellar backcourt of senior Anthony Myers and junior Calvin Banks, who combined to average more than 32 ppg last season. ..... Thomas led the DCIAA in scoring last season (26 ppg), but sometimes tried to do too much, and his play suffered. Ballou, which has gone 45-11 the past two years but didn't advance to the DCIAA final either time, needs another option to relieve some pressure on Thomas. ..... Cardozo, which won an unprecedented four straight titles from 2004 to '07, could get a breakout season from senior G Rafiel Guthrie, who scored 39 and 44 points, respectively, in the Clerks' first two games this season. | TOP TEAMS 1. Ballou (22-6) 2. Coolidge (19-9) 3. Theodore Roosevelt (19-9) TOP PLAYERS F Darin Drakeford, T. Roosevelt, Sr., 6-1 G Raymond Featherston, H.D. | Anne Arundel Coaches are calling the league deeper and more balanced than ever, with as many as six teams harboring realistic hopes of winning the county title. Glen Burnie, Annapolis, Arundel and last season's champion, Old Mill, were the most commonly cited teams to beat. ..... Along with Rudd and Murphy, Glen Burnie has 6-7 forward Justin Kuntz, a transfer from Cardinal Gibbons. ..... Arundel, last year's runner-up, lost 10 players from that team, but the Wildcats bring back a pair of strong guard/forwards in 6-4 Auraum Nuiriankh and 6-2 R.J. Harris. ..... Old Mill, county champs three of the past four years, will be undersized with just one player taller than 6-1. But the Patriots have a sophomore to watch in 5-11 guard/forward Eric Savage. | TOP TEAMS 1. Glen Burnie (13-10) 2. Annapolis (15-8) 3. Old Mill (23-3) TOP PLAYERS G Brendan Bald, Severna Park, Sr., 6-5 G Chris Brice, Annapolis, Jr., 6-1 G-F Tyler Rudd, Glen Burnie, Sr., 6-4 F-C Danny Murphy, Glen Burnie, Sr., 6-6 | |
| Howard River Hill has three players from its 2006 state championship team back on the hardwood. The question is, will the athleticism of football players Mike Campanaro, G Leron Eaddy and F Trey Ames (all seniors) translate into more wins than last year's 14? ..... Long Reach lost standouts Obi Ukwuoma and Deon Queen, but the bulk of Julius Fambro and Mario Lloyde in the low post will again make the Lightning formidable. ..... Howard has a nice trio of guards in Steve Cruz, Quinton Lopez and John Tatum, and the 6-7 Biniak should grab plenty of rebounds. ..... Doolin made heads turn with flashy moves as a freshman, and if he gets hot from the outside come January and February, Marriotts Ridge could be looking at a county title. | TOP TEAMS 1. Atholton (20-6) 2. Howard (17-8) 3. Already with three starters -- including Olasewere (16.3 ppg) -- returning from last year's titlist, Springbrook got a boost with the transfer of junior point guard DeShaunt Walker, who averaged 17 ppg for Kennedy last season. ..... Hicks led Churchill by averaging 15.6 ppg last season and should get plenty of help from Bullis transfer Elijah Gore, a senior point guard who averaged 10 points per game last season. ..... Coming off its second winning season in six years, Walter Johnson is poised to do more behind seniors Nash Oh and Carl Yaffe, who combined to average 29 ppg last year. ..... Juniors, including Dominique Hansberry and Shawn Stephens, occupy 13 of Richard Montgomery's 14 roster spots. ..... | Montgomery 3A/2A/1A With Goodman, a highly-touted transfer from Wise, joining Massey (19.2 ppg), Seneca Valley has huge expectations, and the potential to reach its third region final in four years. ..... Baker (19 ppg) leads a veteran core that made a terrific playoff run before losing in the 1A West final. ..... Seagears transferred from Northwood after averaging 15.5 ppg last year. ..... Paint Branch has some young big bodies in the paint, which should give some room on the perimeter to Griffin (16.6 ppg), one of the county's top guards. ..... After winning once last season, Rockville won its opener behind a pair of promising sophomores, 6-foot-6 swingman DeAndre Kelly and guard Denzel Moore, and an eight-man junior class. | TOP TEAMS 1. Lone returning starter LaQuan Randolph will be joined by Jonathan Thomas, who played at Towson Catholic last year, and Wayne Craig as the Titans try to push deeper into the playoffs. ..... Defending Piedmont Conference champion Walkersville hopes to advance past the 2A West semifinals, where it fell last year, despite graduating its all-time leading scorer. Junior guard Morris (13.2 ppg, conference-best 5.9 apg last season) and senior forwards Jordan Dixon and Chris Harris will shoulder most of the load. ..... Urbana returns three starters -- including defensive ace Brad Hickman (conference-leading 2 spg last year) -- that trigger an up-tempo pace for the Hawks, who averaged just over 62 ppg last year, fourth highest in the league. | TOP TEAMS 1. Urbana (14-10) 2. Walkersville (19-5) 3. | Prince George's 4A Coming off its first regional title since 1980, Laurel has a new coach (Antoine Gaither) and must replace two of its top scorers, but the Spartans will have a tough backcourt led by Hebron and Corey Woods. ..... Roosevelt has been the league's dominant team this decade, but the Raiders return just one starter this season, though that player, Kromah, should be one of the county's best. ..... Wise could be the team to beat, with Golladay (Mount St..Mary's) and C Delonta Boyd forming a strong outside-inside tandem. ..... Seeking its first regional title since winning a state crown in 1994, DuVal added junior G Keith Crockett from Montrose Christian. ..... Bowie, under first-year coach Cedrick Holbrook, could make a move after going 16-8 last season, while Bladensburg will be without 6-8 Patrick Bridges for a few weeks while he recovers from an ankle injury. | TOP TEAMS 1. Eleanor Roosevelt (16-6) 2. Wise (18-6) 3. | Prince George's 3A/2A/1A This is a league filled with new faces, as five of the 10 teams have new coaches and the top two teams from last season -- Gwynn Park (25-2) and Largo (23-4) -- must replace the bulk of their top players. Gwynn Park has no returning starters, while Largo has just one, Martin, from its Maryland 3A championship team. ..... Douglass also has just one returning starter, but new coach Tyrone Massenburg, who previously had success at Suitland, adds the talented Whatley from Princeton Day. ..... Though just two players have varsity experience -- 6-4 F Antonio Belt and 6-5 C Brandon Waters -- Forestville should be among the league's contenders and could be poised to make a postseason run in the 1A South Region like Surrattsville did last year. Coppock-Bey averaged 22.1 points last season and might be one of the area's best scorers. | TOP TEAMS 1. Douglass (10-13) 2. Fairmont Heights (15-9) 3. Potomac (Md.) (5-18) TOP PLAYERS G A.J. Top finishers in the SMAC last year Thomas Stone and Lackey both lost significant chunks of their lineup to graduation but bode athleticism that could propel them to the top of the conference again. ..... As other teams search for chemistry, North Point, in its second varsity season, boasts six experienced seniors and could make strides but lack size in the post. | TOP TEAMS 1.Thomas Stone (24-3) 2.
