Beyer Speed Figures

The Beyer Speed Figure is a rating assigned to every race by every horse in the United States and is incorporated in the Daily Racing Form past performances. It takes into account the time of a horse's performance and the inherent speed of the racing surface. The average winning figure for the Preakness is 110, but all of the entrants in this year's field fall far below that benchmark. Animal Kingdom, the best of the group from the speed-figure standpoint, won the Kentucky Derby with a 103, the second-lowest winning number for the race in the two decades that the figures have been published.
